DERM Heritage Branch administers the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and has responsibility for investigating, researching, and pursuing the entry of built, landscape and historical archaeological places of state significance in the Queensland Heritage Register as well as the assessment and management of development within registered places.

Projects undertaken by the branch regularly require knowledge, skills and experience in:
•    Legislation and its interpretation, particularly the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and Sustainable Planning Act 2009
•    Project management
•    Historic research
•    Significance assessment
•    Assessment of impacts of development on the significance of heritage places
•    Communication, especially community engagement and consultation
•    Site recording, including photographic techniques, architectural descriptions and drawings, and archaeological survey, drawing and site planning
•    GIS and cartography
•    Databases, especially data entry, manipulation and data interpretation
